Background of the Study
Nigerian slang is a dynamic and evolving component of everyday language, reflecting the creativity of its speakers. Morphological adaptability in slang refers to the processes through which new words are formed, often through blending, clipping, or borrowing, and how these processes vary regionally. This study examines the adaptability of morphological structures in Nigerian slang across different regions, comparing variations that emerge in urban centers versus rural communities (Uche, 2023). Regional slang not only captures local cultural nuances but also adapts to external influences such as global media. By analyzing corpora of informal spoken and written language, the research seeks to document innovative word formation processes and identify patterns of morphological variation. The study also considers how these adaptive strategies contribute to the rapid evolution of slang and influence language attitudes and identity among different Nigerian communities (Afolabi, 2024). The findings will offer insights into the resilience and dynamism of informal language, highlighting its role in cultural expression and communication (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian slang is known for its morphological creativity, there is limited comparative research on regional variations in its adaptability. Existing studies often generalize slang usage without considering how word formation processes differ across cultural and geographic contexts (Uche, 2023). This gap hampers our understanding of the mechanisms behind slang evolution and its impact on language identity. Without detailed analysis, the influence of external factors such as media and globalization on regional slang remains underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a comparative analysis of morphological adaptability in Nigerian slang, thereby contributing to a nuanced understanding of informal language dynamics (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document morphological processes in Nigerian slang.
  2. To compare regional variations in word formation.
  3. To assess the impact on language identity.

Research Questions

  1. What morphological strategies are used in Nigerian slang?
  2. How do these strategies vary regionally?
  3. What is the effect on cultural and linguistic identity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the morphological adaptability of Nigerian slang, offering insights into regional language evolution and identity formation. The findings will inform linguists, educators, and cultural practitioners about the dynamic nature of informal language in Nigeria (Uche, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of morphological processes in Nigerian slang across selected regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphological Adaptability: The ability of language to form new words.
  • Nigerian Slang: Informal language used in everyday communication.
  • Regional Variations: Differences in language use across geographic areas.
